Vladimir Guerrero Jr. crushed a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning on Thursday, propelling the Blue Jays to a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox.
The Blue Jays didn’t score their first run of the game until Daulton Varsho swatted a solo homer in the seventh inning. Guerrero then gave them their first lead with a 404-foot (111.8 mph EV) three-run shot off of Justin Slaten that proved to be the difference in the ballgame. He finished the night 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts and is now hitting .267/.358/.422 with four homers and 17 RBI on the season.

It took Guerrero’s seventh barrel of the year to finally get him his first homer, which came off Spencer Strider in the sixth. Even though his groundball rate is a bit lower than usual, Guerrero’s 33 hard-hit balls this season have produced a total of five extra-base hits. Statcast gave him an xSLG of .494, compared to an actual figure of .333, entering today.

It’s now official. Guerrero Jr. gets the massive deal that will likely keep him in Toronto for the remainder of his career — barring something unforeseeable, of course. The 26-year-old has had some down years in his short MLB tenure, but when he’s been at his best there have been few hitters in the sport better.
